Tuition and Housing

Tuition credit hours fees for the academic year 2007/2008 are as follows:

SLIS Graduate Student: Indiana Resident:
$299.81/credit hour
Nonresident:
$873.34/credit hour

Credit Hours
SLIS students normally take 9 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters. (The university considers 8 credit hours as fulltime for graduate students, but most SLIS courses are 3 credit hours each.) It is recommended that you plan for three hours of homework per credit hour of class each week. Thus: 9 hours of classes + 27 hours of homework = 36 hours a week. Then, many students hold a 10-15 hour per week job.

Mandatory Fees
In addition to tuition, students pay other fees that help to provide services and resources. Current fee rates are available from the Office of the Bursar Below is a short description some of the benefits the fees bring you.

Bloomington Housing

Helpful Websites
Below are several websites created by local rental agencies to promote their properties. SLIS does not advocate any particular agency. We felt these websites might make relocation a little easier. Most sites have color photos of the property, floor plans, amenities, rents, and city maps of the location. We recommend asking if the property is rented primarily to graduate students and professionals. Some apartment complexes rent primarily to undergraduates so it's good to ask about the potential living environment.

On-Campus

Indiana University Residential Services
Residential Programs and Services rents all on campus apartment complexes and graduate dorms. Many of their plans include utilities and can include meal plans.

Graduate and Professional Student Organziation (includes shared housing)
GPSO provides a list of housing opportunities for graduate students interested in off-campus or shared housing. The list is built and maintained by graduate students for graduate students.

IU Real Estate Department, Property Management
(812-855-3054)
IU owns many houses on and around campus that are rented to students, faculty and staff only. They do not maintain a website so call to check on availability.

Local Newspapers

Indiana Daily Student Classifieds
Campus newspaper. Many of the rentals listed on within easy walking distance of campus.

The Bloomington Herald Times Classifieds
Bloomington local newspaper. Rentals for Monroe county as well as within city limits. Good source for house rentals not affiliated with property management companies.

Pet-Friendly Housing Links by the Monroe County Humane Association

Local Property Management Companies

These links are to help you explore housing options in Bloomington.

It is not a complete list, and we are not endorsing any particular company. It is to help. Questions that are useful to ask:

  1. Is it on the bus line?
  2. Any utilities included in the price?
  3. Is it primarily graduate and professionals vs. undergraduates?
  4. Is it a quiet complex?
