Tuition and Housing
Tuition credit hours fees for the academic year 2007/2008 are as follows:
$299.81/credit hour
Nonresident:
$873.34/credit hour
Credit Hours
SLIS students normally take 9 credit hours in the fall and
spring semesters. (The university considers 8 credit hours as
fulltime for graduate students, but most SLIS courses are
3 credit hours each.) It is recommended that you plan for
three hours of homework per credit hour of class each week.
Thus: 9 hours of classes + 27 hours of homework = 36 hours
a week. Then, many students hold a 10-15 hour per week job.
Mandatory Fees
In addition to tuition, students pay other
fees that help to provide services and resources. Current fee rates are
available from the Office of the Bursar
Below is a short description some of the benefits the fees bring you.
- Student Activity Fee
All athletic events (except football and mens basketball) are free during the regular season with a valid IU student ID. Reduced student rates are available for the Jacobs School of Music performances including concerts, Ballet, and Opera; Department of Theatre and Drama productions; and most Auditorium events. Contact the performance venue for more information. The fee also provides unlimited access to Recreational Sports facilities, including the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building (HPER) and the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC). - Student Health Fee
The student health fee provides many free and discounted services at the Indiana University Health Center. Benefits include a reduced charge of $18 for routine medical clinic visits, two free visits (excluding psychiatry) to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) each semester, free prescheduled appointments to the womens clinic, and several free or discounted services available through the Health and Wellness clinic, such as fitness assessments. More information on health fees. - Technology Fee
The technology fee provides free technology workshops free online tutorials. Free or reduced cost software available through IUware online or at the IU Bookstores. The fee also funds STC computing labs, including 24 hour access at the Wells Library Information Commons. - Transportation Fee
Both Bloomington Transit and the Campus Bus services are free with a valid IU student ID. Service from campus includes routes to College mall, downtown, several apartment complexes, and the stadium parking lots. You can park at the stadium with a valid E parking permit and ride free to campus. See their websites for full route information and schedules.
Office of the Bursar - Rates and Policies:
The Office of the Bursar (812)855-2636 handles your tuition bills. Their
website also has details on
mandatory fees (ie. activity fee, student health fee).
Residence Classification:
The IU Office of the Registrar (812)855-0121 handles residence classification
questions. Physical presence at Indiana does not guarantee resident
classification. Residency status for individuals under 21 years of age is
determined by the parent's residency. Individuals 21 and older who are entering
Indiana from other states or countries for the purpose of pursuing their
education at Indiana University will NOT be granted residency status. More information...
International Student Expenses:
The estimated expenses for international students can be
helpful for any new student. Look for the graduate student
estimates.

Bloomington Housing
Helpful Websites
Below are several websites created by local rental agencies to promote their
properties. SLIS does not advocate any particular agency. We felt these websites
might make relocation a little easier. Most sites have color photos of the
property, floor plans, amenities, rents, and city maps of the location. We
recommend asking if the property is rented primarily to graduate students and
professionals. Some apartment complexes rent primarily to undergraduates so it's
good to ask about the potential living environment.
On-Campus
Indiana University Residential
Services
Residential Programs and Services rents all on campus
apartment complexes and graduate dorms. Many of their plans include utilities
and can include meal plans.
Graduate
and Professional Student Organziation (includes shared housing)
GPSO provides a list of housing opportunities for graduate students interested
in off-campus or shared housing. The list is built and maintained by graduate
students for graduate students.
IU Real Estate Department, Property Management
(812-855-3054)
IU owns many houses on and around campus that are rented to students, faculty
and staff only. They do not maintain a website so call to check on
availability.

It is not a complete list, and we are not endorsing any particular company. It is to help. Questions that are useful to ask:
- Is it on the bus line?
- Any utilities included in the price?
- Is it primarily graduate and professionals vs. undergraduates?
- Is it a quiet complex?
