Internet and Network Services

"When the colloquial meaning of 'network service' is invoked, there usually is a scenario in mind of a person using an application on a computer with a network connection in some kind of client/server model. The key facets of this scenario are:

  1. It involves a person interacting with an application to accomplish a task.
  2. It involves an application running on a computer that has access to a network.
  3. It involves a second network-connected computer application that is willing to provide.

one or more functions across the network to the first application." University of Toronto

This definition shows just how broad the field of Internet and Network Services' can be. Jobs titles can range from the standard Webmaster to a new title. -- Chief Web Officer

Systems Analysis

"The analysis of the role of a proposed system and the identification of the requirements that it should meet. The term is most commonly used in the context of commercial programming, where software developers are often classed as either systems analysts or programmers. The systems analysts are responsible for identifying requirement (i.e.systems analysis) and producing a design. The programmers are then responsible for implementing it". - Free On-line Dictionary of Computing

The School of Library and Information Science's human-centered approach to systems analysis and the amount of groupwork incorporated in our courses prepares students to excell in this challenging field.

Information Organization and Management

"The effective management of information resources is critical to successful organizational performance. This is as true of a Fortune 500 corporation, as of a hospital or small liberal arts college. Information resources also include an organization's capital information assets, its network capabilities, and materials held in libraries, information centers and archives. Organizational information assets also include human, structural and customer intellectual capital. The purpose of the strategic intelligence management function is to integrate internal information and external intelligence in support of organizational goals and objectives." Dr. Blaise Cronin

Information Architecture and Design

"Information architecture involves the design of organization, labeling, navigation, and indexing systems to support both browsing and searching. It plays a central role in determining whether users can easily find the information they need" - Argus Associates. It is the user-centered approach to Information Science at Indiana University that makes IU and Information Architecture such a good fit.

Business Consulting

"Consultants are in the business of providing services to firms that involve specialized knowledge, a fresh perspective and high expertise. It would be hard to find an area which fits this description better than systems consulting, the practice of offering advice to organizations about the optimal configuration of their information systems, integration of information systems, introduction of client-server computing, participating in software design and recommending hardware purchases" - Career Paths in Accounting and Consulting.

Information Science graduates are in high demand by consulting firms -- evidenced by the number of our graduates who work for consulting firms such as Accenture, Deloitte & Touche, and Ernst & Young.
