General Description

The University of Tennessee invites applications for Archivist and Assistant Professor. We are seeking a creative, outgoing professional with the potential for publication and leadership. This position is in the Special Collections Department, a service oriented team that provides access to rare and unique primary materials in support of the research community. Special Collections includes manuscripts, rare books and University Archives with particular strengths in Tennesseana, Southeastern Native American tribes, the Civil War, Tennessee Valley Authority and the Smoky Mountains. This position works closely with the Head of Special Collections in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures for the acquisition, processing, organization, and accessibility of the collection.

The Archivist directs activities of the University Archives by collecting, evaluating, arranging, describing, and preserving archival materials. S/He has responsibility for oversight of processing and preservation of archival and manuscript collections, including the creation of EAD-encoded finding aids. Innovation is encouraged in promoting the use of Archives through online finding aids, exhibits, special events, and outreach activities; and providing collection access to a global community. An exciting part of the position will be developing contacts with departments and other potential donors of collection materials. Digital Library Initiatives and the University of Tennessee’s newly developed digital repository will be partners in the selection, management, and implementation of digitization projects. Library faculty must meet University requirements for promotion and tenure, which includes research and service components.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program. Knowledge of current issues and trends in archival practices. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of archival descriptive standards such as Encoded Archival Description (EAD). Familiarity with preservation practices. Understanding of digital projects and digitization standards. Evidence of strong technical and computer skills. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative environment. Commitment to providing quality service and broad access to collections.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in archives or special collections. Project management experience and demonstrated leadership skills.
