PLEASE NOTE: The Smathers Libraries has a pending grant application that is under final review by the funding agency. This position is conditional upon award and funding of the grant. If awarded, the position will be time-limited to approximately 24 months. The announcement as to whether we will receive the award is anticipated to take place in October 2009. This position would replace a library staff member who will be reassigned to the grant for its multi-year duration. This recruitment effort is conditional on award and funding, and if the application is unsuccessful the advertised position will not be filled.
The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries is recruiting for the position of IT Expert in the Library’s Information Technology department. This position will perform duties related to the creation and support of software applications for IT and other Library departments.
The duties of this position include:
1. Performs analysis and programming to develop, document, and maintain computer software programs as needed by the Systems department and other library units as appropriate. The primary emphasis will be on web and/or desktop database systems which deliver digital resources to the public, improve staff productivity, or facilitate the compilation of analytical data. Duties will also include maintenance of existing web and desktop applications. Coordinates with teams of catalogers, collection managers, educators, and other information professionals in order to create deliverable products as needed.
2. Designs, implements and maintains relational database components (tables, SQL stored procedures, etc.) necessary for effective and secure data storage and data presentation. Emphasis on system security.
3. Assists library staff in the use of microcomputers by providing assistance to users of programs maintained by the Systems Department.
4. Keeps abreast of current and emerging research in information technology, library automation and other technical standards and practices by participating in professional development, performing article and professional research as needed, monitoring professional discussion lists and participating in appropriate professional meetings. Monitors professional discussion lists and participates in professional meetings related to programming, database, or internet topics.
Minimum qualifications:
A high school diploma and four years of any combination of relevant experience, education and/or certification. The level of expertise and skill required to qualify for a position in this classification is generally attained through combinations of education and experience in the field. While such employees commonly have a bachelor's or higher degree, no particular academic degree is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science
Demonstrated ability to function as part of a team.
Demonstrated experience with SQL or other database query equivalent.
Demonstrated experience with multiple programming languages
Demonstrated knowledge of relational database models.
Experience with Microsoft Windows systems and familiarity with Windows server operating systems (NT, 2000 Server, .NET)
Demonstrated experience with mark-up languages (i.e., HTML, XML)
Excellent communication skills and demonstrated experience in the preparation of documentation.
Independently problem solving skills
Ability to manage time and be productive
Experience with web scripting languages
Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Internet Information Server
Experience with .NET programming environment
Experience with C# programming language
