Job description:
The Communications and Public Relations Office at Vancouver Island
University is seeking a creative, dynamic Web Programmer/Analyst to join
our team and help lead us into the future. We need an experienced
developer with an expert understanding of modern programming languages and
practices, as well as experience with HTTP and XHTML. If you strive to

What you will be doing in this position: Designing information
architecture, navigational structure and graphical user interfaces using
suite of web development tools and technologies including SQL, .NET (C#),
ASP, HTML/XHTML/XML, XSLT (preferred), Javascript, and CSS among others.
Perform web development including investigation, design, analysis,
programming, testing and implementation. Developing and maintaining
dynamic web pages and frameworks for presentation of database-driven
content including database design, development and/or integration
programming. Researching, recommending and implementing custom and
vendor-provided online technology solutions to meet service objectives.
Administering front-end and back-end aspects of the University web
presence (IIS as well as an additional LAMP server), content management
systems and custom databases; creating and modifying user accounts and
permissions, overseeing the web publishing process and performing a wide
range of web interface custom development and programming/maintenance
tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Bachelor's Degree in computer science or technology from an appropriately
accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and
experience; three to five recent consecutive years of full time experience
in a development environment, with the emphasis on web development,
preferably in the higher education industry; strong foundation in modern
object-oriented programming languages; excellent understanding of IT/Web
infrastructure, communications, marketing, and customer service
principles; proficiency in both typed dynamic O-O languages (Ruby,
Python), and static O-O languages (C#, Java); strict adherence to the
publicly vetted industry standards (The World Wide Web Consortium - W3C);
in-depth grasp of semantic markup (XHTML and XML), Document Object Model
(DOM), layout (CSS), and the client-side behavior (Javascript); experience
translating informal end-user requirements into detailed Information
Architecture and Implementation requirements; focus on providing high
quality end-user experience (interaction design); experience with quality
assurance techniques and practices (Test driven and Behavior driven
design); hands-on experience with agile development practices;
demonstrable ability to provide solutions while adhering to the `less
code' approach; expert-level experience (have developed medium-large
projects) using Microsoft .NET, C#, ASP.NET, Java (preferably J2EE), one
of PHP/Python/Perl/Ruby, or Database design & development with MySQL, MS
Access, and either SQL Server or Oracle; experience developing in typical
Microsoft (Windows/IIS) and Unix (Linux/Apache) environments. Excellent
interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with the pressures of
multiple deadlines in a shifting operational environment; ability to work
both independently and in a team-oriented environment. Deadlines may
necessitate the need for evening and weekend work; therefore, flexibility
in scheduling is required.
