Science and Engineering Librarian/Information Scientist
The University of New Mexico Libraries (UL) has THREE openings for a Science and Engineering Librarian/Information Scientist. This is a full-time, 12 month faculty position. Tenure status and faculty rank will be negotiable based on experience and professional qualifications. The desired start date is May 3, 2010. The annual salary is negotiable and includes full benefits.
Position Description
We are seeking enthusiastic and innovative Librarian/Information Scientist to play a leadership role in planning, implementing and supporting programs in data intensive research and data management. The Librarian will work closely with the Center for Advanced Research Computing, other UL subject liaisons, members of the Cataloging and Discovery Services division and IT staff in initiating projects to enhance the university’s research and scholarly data management and curation programs. S/he will take a lead role in developing policies and procedures for all phases of the data life cycle, data visualization support, and support of data intensive research collaboration on campus. The Librarian will also develop and provide training, and perform outreach to inform the campus community about the UL’s data management initiatives and liaise with appropriate departments. The Librarian will report directly to the Associate Dean for Research, Science & International Initiatives. Acting as a member of a team, the Librarian may be expected to provide outreach at service points on a schedule which may include evenings and weekends. The Librarian will also participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements: Earned masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or international equivalent) or earned doctoral degree in computer science, computer engineering, information science, or an informatics concentration in any discipline, and One year (12 months) experience working with information systems or digital data from one or more of the following sources:
o Spatial
o Data-intensive research projects
o Real-time data sets/services
Preferred (Desired) Qualifications: Earned degree in a science or technology subject area. Significant coursework in computer science, informatics, or digital technologies. Experience designing or creating databases. Experience implementing web 2.0 services. Experience working in an academic or research library. Demonstrated knowledge of two or more of the following:
o maps and cartographic information in digital form (GIS)
o data visualization
o data repositories, preservation, and curation (data life cycle management)
o data intensive research systems
o statistical data sets and analyses
o electronic collaboration systems Proven analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work well independently and with others. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively. Evidence of outstanding customer service, collaboration, and outreach skills. Supervisory experience.
Primary Duties
Conduct instruction, provide research assistance, and perform outreach in cooperation with one or more of the following departmental clusters: Nano, Chemical and Physical Sciences (Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy) Computer, Information Technology and Information sciences (Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Information science, Gaming and Animation Studies) Mathematical and Life sciences (Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Psychology, Physical Anthropology, and related medical sciences) Energy, Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Geology, Water Resources Program, Sustainability Studies Program, and Geography)
Program development will take place in one or more of the following areas: 1) Data visualization, spatial data management, and GIS or 2) Data Intensive Research support, or 3) Data Life Cycle management.
Working as a team, perform outreach and act as library liaison to one or more of the following: 1) Center for Advanced Research Computing, 2) the Image and Video Processing and Communications Lab, 3) ARTS Lab (Art, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory), 4) the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program, 5) the Center for High Technology Materials, 6) the Center for Micro-Engineered Materials, 7) the Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies, 8) the Earth Data Analysis Center.
Environment The University of New Mexico Libraries contains over 2 million volumes and includes four branch libraries: Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts & Design Library, Parish Memorial Library (business and economics), and Zimmerman Library (education, humanities and social sciences). Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. The UL is a regional library in the Federal Depository Library Program.
