Instructions for Registration at IUPUI

1. Be admitted

If you plan to enroll in credit courses at IUPUI, you must be admitted to the University before you may register. There are 2 acceptable ways to be admitted to SLIS:

Complete and return the formal SLIS application by the following deadlines:

Fall Admissions: May 15
Spring Admissions: November 1
Summer Admissions: March 15

This application is sent to the Bloomington SLIS office and should include completed application forms, 3 letters of recommendation, a personal essay explaining academic and career objectives, official transcripts from each college attended, GRE scores if your undergraduate GPA is lower than a 3.0, and the application fee ($40).

Temporary Basis

Prospective students who wish to begin taking courses before being formally admitted to the School of Library and Information Science may be admitted on a temporary basis. The school allows students to take 6.0 credit hours (2 classes) of graduate level (500 level and above) courses before being formally admitted to the school. Upon or before completion of 6.0 credits, all temporary students must be officially admitted to SLIS or credits taken beyond the 6.0 hours may not be counted toward the degree.

NOTE: L401- Computer-based Information Tools is an undergraduate course and is not counted in the above mentioned 6.0 credit hours.

An application for temporary admission may be obtained from the IUPUI SLIS office. Completed applications are returned to the IUPUI SLIS office for processing. Please allow at least 1 week for processing of the application after which you may contact IUPUI SLIS (278-2375) to verify your admissions status.

2. Discuss course options and scheduling with your academic advisor

All admitted students are assigned an academic advisor upon admission to the school. Temporary students may discuss scheduling options with any faculty member who has comparable interests. Krystal McReynolds, whose office is located on the IUPUI campus (UL 1110 C), is also available by appointment to talk with any new student. Ms. McReynolds may be reached at 278-2375 or kcmcreyn@iupui.edu

3. Register for classes

Please see the IUPUI Schedule of Classes or the IUPUI Office of the Registrar's home page for a complete registration instructions. Dates for registration at IUPUI are published in each of these sources. Also available are instructions for using the touch-tone and computer registration systems. A copy of the IUPUI Schedule of Classes may be obtained from the following:

IUPUI Office of the Registrar: Cavanaugh Hall 133
IUPUI - SLIS office: University Library 1110 C
Any branch of the Indianapolis- Marion County Public Library

OneStart is the Indiana Student Information Transaction Environment, a web-based service for Indiana University students, faculty, and staff, that provides secure access to student information. For students, access to information is protected by Student-ID number (SIDN) and PIN. Through OneStart, students may access the schedule of classes, transcripts, the bursar statement, grade reports, etc. This is an excellent resource to explore.

Priority Registration: By Appointment (Computer or Telephone)

All students enrolled during one academic term are automatically given a registration appointment for the following term(s). For example, a student enrolled in the spring term will be given appointments for the summer and fall. You will be notified by letter of your exact registration appointment day and time. If you have not received your appointment in the mail, visit INSITE. If you previously attended any IU campus (including IUPUI) but were not enrolled at IUPUI in the current term and wish to enroll, call the registration appointment line at (317) 274-1512 on or after the date specified in the academic calendar. Following their registration, all students will receive a bill in the mail. Be sure to keep your address current with the IUPUI Office of the Registrar.

Students may enroll by computer, whether from campus or from home or office.

While students are encouraged to register as close to their original appointment time as possible, students may register any time after their appointment until registration ends immediately preceding the first day of classes. Students may register during the first week of the term, but will be assessed a late registration fee. For specific dates, see the academic calendar for the semester in question. Students enrolling for both summer sessions or for the fall and either or both summer terms may do so with a single appointment. If using touch-tone, an eligible student may enroll for all three terms in a single call or may make multiple calls as he or she chooses.

Waiting Lists for Closed Courses

Most IUPUI courses provide a waiting list option should they be closed (all seats taken) when a student attempts to register. Visit the Automated Course Exchange/Waitlist on OneStart for information on this process. In recent semesters IUPUI has placed approximately 75% of all waitlist requests. The Automated IUPUI Waitlist Notification System will contact students any time a waitlist request has been satisfied. In addition, waitlist courtesy notification mailings will be sent to the current address.

Waitlist request will remain active until the end of the first 3 days of classes.

4. Pay your bill

When & How to Pay?
