Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship Specialization
Candidates in this 36 credit hour specialization receive the MLS degree with a certificate indicating the specialization. In consultation with their advisors, students complete the core course requirements (15 credit hours) and at least 9 credits from the following lists of electives or other workshops, research, readings, or special topics courses approved by the director of the specialization:
- S582 - Preservation
- S580 - History of Libraries
- S684 - Descriptive Bibliography
- S584 - Manuscripts
- S583 - Rare Book Librarianship
- S680 - The Book to 1450
- S681 - The Book 1450 to the Present
- S629 - Topics in Information Sources and Services
Students must also complete S605 - Internship in Library and Information Science (3 credit internship working in a position related to rare books or manuscripts).
There are limited openings in this highly competitive specialization. Some classes also have limited enrollment and may require faculty authorization.
