African Studies (Master of Arts) and Master of Library Science

Academic programs in African Studies continue to grow, with a corresponding need for librarians who have knowledge and research experience in both the humanities and social science aspects of this field. The dual MA/MLS program requires completion of a minimum of 56 credit hours of graduate course work, rather than the 66 credit hours required if the two degrees are earned separately. Students must apply for admission to the masters programs of both the School of Library and Information Science and the African Studies Program and meet the admissions criteria established for each. The two degrees must be awarded simultaneously.

In addition to the SLIS S401 pre-requisite, students must complete:

  1. MLS Foundation courses (15 credits), with S551 (L527) - Library Management to fulfill the management and leadership skills requirement
  2. Advanced course on information sources (3 credits) either S521 (L623) - Humanities Information or S522 (L625) - Social Science Information
  3. SLIS elective courses (12 credits) Chosen in consultation with the students SLIS advisor (an internship related to African Studies Librarianship is strongly advised). Internships may be taken for S605 (L596) course credit.

Master of Arts in African Studies (26 credit hours) Information on requirements is available from the African Studies Program

Interested applicants may apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships through the African Studies Program, Woodburn Hall 221, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-6000, (812) 855-6825.
