Art History (Master of Arts) and Master of Library Science

This program is designed to prepare students for professional library and information specialist positions in fine arts and related libraries and information centers. The program requires a minimum of 60 hours of graduate course work including a comprehensive set of required courses and overlapping electives. Students must apply for admission to the master's programs of both the School of Library and Information Science and the School of Fine Arts and meet the admissions criteria established for each. The two degrees must be awarded simultaneously.

In addition to the SLIS S401 pre-requisite, students must complete:

  1. The MLS Foundation courses (15 credit hours).
  2. Other required SLIS courses (9 cr.): S521 (L623) - Humanities Information, S651 (L630) - Art Librarianship and S605 (L596) - Internship in Library and Information Science.
  3. SLIS elective courses (6 cr.) chosen from among S533 (L570) - Online Searching, S532 (L571) - Information Architecture for the Web, S652 (L566) - Digital Libraries or S633 (L583) - Indexing to bring the total of SLIS credit hours completed to 30.

At least 30 credit hours in the School of Fine Arts are required. Course work must include A500, A575, and no fewer than two seminars in two areas. Also required are four lecture courses at the 400 and 500 levels, at least two of which must be in Western art. For specific requirements, see the Art History section of the IU Graduate School Bulletin

Note on Tuition Costs:

Students in SLIS dual-degree programs may find variance in their tuition charges. There is not a standardized method of coding students in dual-degree programs. The School of Library and Information Science, the University Graduate School, the Law School, the School of Music, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the School of Journalism, and other academic units each charge different graduate tuition rates per credit hour. You will be coded in one school. If, as you near the half-way point in your dual degree program, you will contact either school (SLIS or your other unit), we can arrange to change your coding so that they second half of your degree will be charged at the other unit's tuition rate. Check with the Recorder of either school if you have questions.
