Master of Library Science/Master of Information Science

60 credit hours + S401

The Indiana University School of Library and Information Science is among the top-ranked graduate and professional programs in library and information science. To help meet the changing demands of the information profession, SLIS has established the Master of Information Science/Master of Library Science dual-degree program.

The SLIS dual MIS/MLS master degrees can be completed with 60 credit hours of coursework rather than the 78 hours required if the degrees were taken separately. Students should work with their faculty advisors on course schedule plans. There is some flexibility with the sequencing of requirements.

In addition to the SLIS S401 pre-requisite, students must complete:

  1. 15 credits of MLS Foundation courses,
  2. 21 credits of MIS Foundation courses, and
  3. 24 credits of electives.

Fulltime students, averaging nine credit hours each semester (including summer sessions), should be able to complete this dual program in 2 1/2 years. The two degrees must be awarded simultaneously. Students currently pursuing one of the degree programs may petition in writing for admittance to this dual master's degree. The petition must include an additional personal goals statement (minimum 500 words) describing academic and career objectives.

Students admitted prior to Fall 2007 may elect to follow the earlier MIS curriculum. For this 60 hour dual degree, students would then complete: 15 hours (MLS Foundation), 15 hours (MIS Foundation and Specialization), and 30 hours of SLIS Electives - as approved by their advisor.
