Russian and East European Studies (Master of Arts) and Master of Library Science
Study for the two degrees can be combined for a total of 54 credit hours rather than the 66 credit hours required for the two degrees taken separately.
In addition to the SLIS S401 pre-requisite, students must complete:
- The MLS Foundation courses (15 credit hours).
- SLIS electives, not including SLIS S605 and REEI R620 (SLIS S629), which are considered part of the Russian and East European Studies degree, chosen in consultation with the adviser, to bring the total of credit hours to 30.
Students take 24 credit hours in Russian and East European Studies, including R600, R601, R620, four courses from area studies courses (one each from the social science group, the historical/geographical group, the sociocultural group, and the literature group), SLIS S605 (L596) - Internship in Library and Information Science (in an area pertinent to REEI), and complete all other requirements for the Russian and East European Studies MA, including the language proficiency exam, MA essay, and oral defense.
Application for admission to the dual MA/MLS degree program must be made to the School of Library and Information Science for study toward the Master of Library Science and to the Russian and East European Institute for study toward the Master of Arts degree. Applicants must be accepted by both degree programs. The student must select an MA essay committee of three faculty members representing both REEI and SLIS. Note on Tuition Costs:
Students in SLIS dual-degree programs may find variance in their tuition charges. There is not a standardized method of coding students in dual-degree programs. The School of Library and Information Science, the University Graduate School, the Law School, the School of Music, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the School of Journalism, and other academic units each charge different graduate tuition rates per credit hour. You will be coded in one school. If, as you near the half-way point in your dual degree program, you will contact either school (SLIS or your other unit), we can arrange to change your coding so that they second half of your degree will be charged at the other unit's tuition rate. Check with the Recorder of either school if you have questions.
