Specializations within Masters Degrees

African Studies Librarianship Specialization and Master of Library Science

This curriculum has been approved effective Fall 2010. Candidates in this Specialization will receive the MLS degree and the African Studies Librarianship Specialization which will be noted on the transcript. Students in this Specialization will complete the following requirements:

Students in this specialization program will complete the listed requirements that will total 45 credits.

  1. 1. Prerequisite and Requirements
    Prerequisite:
    (3 undergraduate credit hours)
    Must be fulfilled before completion of 9 credit hours
    S401 - Computer-Based Information Tools
    MLS Foundation:
    (Each course is 3 credit hours, for a total of 15 hours)
    Choose one course from each area:
    Assist and Educate Users
    Develop and Manage Collections of Information Resources
    Represent and Organize Information Resources
    Manage and Lead Libraries and Other Information Organizations
    Use Research Effectively
  2. 2. Required
    SLIS courses (12 credit hours)
    Electives are to be chosen in consultation with the African studies area specialist in the IU Library to bring the total of SLIS credit hours to 27.

    A total of 18 credit hours from African studies, which must include:

The courses from African studies must all be taken for graduate credit. If the applicant's background already contains course work that is judged to cover any or all of the required areas listed above, suitable electives chosen in consultation with the African Studies area specialist may be substituted.

Interested applicants may apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships through the African Studies Program, Woodburn Hall 221, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405-6000, (812) 855-6825. Students in this specialization may also be eligible for internship opportunities in the IU library.
