Archives and Records Management Specialization
To help students be competitive in this career path, the requirements for this Specialization have been increased to 18 hours. This meets the Society of American Archivists' recommendation for 18 semester credit hours in areas defined as core archival knowledge.
All students admitted after January 2007, who pursue this Specialization, must complete the requirements. Students admitted prior to January 2007 may choose this option or they may complete the 12 credit hour elective requirements listed in the SLIS 2006-2008 Bulletin.
Requirements
Candidates in this joint program receive the MLS degree and the Specialization. The Specialization will be noted on the transcript [effective for May 2009 graduates]. Students in the Archives and Records Management Specialization must:
Foundation core course requirements (15 hours + S401, 3 hours)
- complete S581 - Archives and Records Management
- complete a 3 credit internship S605 - Internship in Library and Information Science in a position related to archives and records management
- complete a minimum of 12 additional credit hours from the following list of classes:
- S582 - Preservation
- S584 - Manuscripts
- S603 - Workshops in Library and Information Science
- Encoded Archival Description
- S604 - Topics in Library and Information Science
- Advanced Archival Access
- Advanced Archival Appraisal
- Audio Preservation - Principles and Practices
- Audio-Visual Archives
- Electronic Description of Archival Materials
- History of Archives and Recordkeeping
- Oral History
- Public Programming for Historical Organizations and Archives
- Records Management
- S685 - Electronic Records Management
- Other courses chosen in consultation with the Specialization Advisor
