New Book!
The Multilingual Internet: Language, Culture, and Communication Online, co-edited by Brenda Danet and Susan C. Herring, was published by Oxford University Press in May, 2007. A description of the book can be found on the OUP website. A table of contents is available here. Check it out if you're interested in computer-mediated communication from a global perspective.
Language@Internet
On January 1, 2008, I took on the editorship of Language@Internet, a peer-reviewed, open-access online journal that publishes original research on language and language use mediated by the Internet, the World Wide Web, and mobile technologies. The journal was created in 2004 as part of the Digital Peer Publishing (DiPP) initiative of the Ministry of Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and is archived by the University Libraries Center in Cologne, Germany.
Handbook of Pragmatics of CMC
Proposal and manuscript submissions are solicited for a Handbook of the Pragmatics of Computer-Mediated Communication, to be published by Mouton de Gruyter. The handbook, one of nine in a series of Handbooks of Pragmatics, will be edited by me, Dieter Stein (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany), and Tuija Virtanen (Åbo Akademi University, Finland). The Ninth Persistent Conversation minitrack will take place at the 42nd Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS-42) to be held in Waikaloa on the Big Island of Hawai'i, January 5-8, 2009. Abstracts are due April 21, 2008 (deadline extended), and 10-page papers are due June 15, 2008.
