Dynamo
(2000-2003)

The goal of the Dynamo project is to explore how to integrate interactive
information devices in shared public spaces. Our research takes place
against a background of rapid advances in mobile communication technologies,
an increase in the availability of online information, a growing prominence
of digital display technologies in public spaces and the widespread adoption
of low cost personal devices.
Our research includes:
- The conduct of empirical studies investigating how people interact with information on integrated PDAs and large shared displays in various settings
- The design of an innovative interactive interface that promotes public cooperative access to and discussion of information
- The development, deployment and evaluation of interconnected large shared displays, enabling multiple users to gather round them and interact with information and collaborative applications running on them
- A generalisable framework and account of how devices can be combined effectively to allow groups of people to access, distribute and share information in different domains
- The development of guidelines for designing and evaluating shared information spaces
