Dynamo (2000-2003)

Students gathered around Dynamo display

The goal of the Dynamo project is to explore how to integrate interactive information devices in shared public spaces. Our research takes place against a background of rapid advances in mobile communication technologies, an increase in the availability of online information, a growing prominence of digital display technologies in public spaces and the widespread adoption of low cost personal devices.

Our research includes:

  1. The conduct of empirical studies investigating how people interact with information on integrated PDAs and large shared displays in various settings
  2. The design of an innovative interactive interface that promotes public cooperative access to and discussion of information
  3. The development, deployment and evaluation of interconnected large shared displays, enabling multiple users to gather round them and interact with information and collaborative applications running on them
  4. A generalisable framework and account of how devices can be combined effectively to allow groups of people to access, distribute and share information in different domains
  5. The development of guidelines for designing and evaluating shared information spaces
