SLIS Network — Fall 2009

Alumni Magazine cover

“The doctoral program at SLIS was originally established in 1964, when the Division of Library Science was still housed within the School of Education. The first two graduates of the doctoral program - Navanitaya Intrama and William Studer - defended their dissertations four years later in 1968. In the 41 years since then, SLIS has awarded 168 doctorates, and I expect as many as six students to defend their dissertations by the end of the 2010 spring semester.

Librarian of the Year Award: Team Cedar Rapids

Photo of Rebecca Bartlett

"The warning came a scant five-and-a-half hours ahead of the water June 11. Predicted to top out at 24 feet, the Cedar River crested at 31. Despite heroic efforts by the staff to move everything out of danger to 26'-high shelves, the Cedar Rapids Public Library (CRPL), IA, lost 160,000 items including large parts of its adult and youth collections, magazines, newspapers, reference materials, CDs, and DVDs. Most of its public access computers were destroyed as was its computer lab and microfilm equipment. The automatic circulation and security systems were ruined. On top of that, the 84,000 square foot Central Library was contaminated and has been closed ever since those three days in June. The work of the CRPL management team to restore service and embrace the recovery is an inspiration for Cedar Rapids and for all librarians…"

Dean’s Note – SLIS Alumni Magazine, Fall 2009

Photo of Blasie Cronin

If we did not grant doctorates, there would not be a field. Or if there were, it would be a field with decidedly limited prestige and little or no academic credibility. It is not an accident that the leading library and information science schools, however you care to define leading, have doctoral programs

Dean's Note - SLIS Network, Fall 2008

Photo of Blaise Cronin

Most of you reading this short piece spent at least five years at university and at least one of those years was spent here at SLIS. And most of you, I'd wager, received some sort of scholarship and/or fellowship, however modest, at some point in your student days to help you on your way. Who knows, a few of you might not have been able to complete your studies without such support. I wonder, too, how many of you could recall the names attached to those financial lifelines or, indeed, conjure up the faces behind the awards. Coffin, Egloff, Grumling, and Rufsvold are just some of the named fellowships that we have in our endowment. Have you ever wondered why these donors felt impelled to endow a scholarship or prize? I suspect—actually, I know—that more than a few of those good souls who have given gifts to the school did so precisely because they themselves had been touched by the generosity of others.

Information Research at SLIS: Magazine Feature Part 1

Alumni Magazine Cover

Faculty leadership in library and information science research enriches classroom experiences because students are introduced to contemporary practice within a theoretical context that enhances understanding and provides support for the next stages of their professional careers. Faculty involvement in research also helps to connect the school with alumni; SLIS graduates' encounters with real-world challenges have prompted discussions and even investigations that suggest new research paths and extend our understanding. How does the research being conducted currently by SLIS faculty members affect the everyday work of practitioners and the greater public?

SLIS Alumni Magazine - Center Feature, Fall 2007: Part 1

Cover of the Fall 07 Alumni Magazine

What has been, and will be, the impact of information technology (IT) on society? For years, journalists and media pundits have generally used anecdotal information rather than empirical studies in reporting the influence of IT on economics, culture, and business. Computer scientists have tended to focus on the technical aspects of IT. In contrast, social informatics (SI) examines both the technical and social consequences of IT on both organizations and individuals. SI researchers investigate the roles IT plays in social and organizational change and how the social organization of IT is influenced by social forces and practices.

SLIS Network, Spring 2007: Civic Engagement

1962 vs 2007 students

Civic Engagement—is the theme for the Spring 2007 issue of the SLIS alumni magazine, SLIS Network.

The idea of the civic library has been part of the conversation for public libraries for over a decade. Diantha Schull, Executive Director of Libraries for the Future, characterized it this way:

"We speak of the 'civic library' to suggest the library's powerful function as a social space, an integrator of diverse groups within the broader community, and an interface between government agencies and citizens, between students and information, and between voters and candidates. Through the civic library concept we see the library and its community as interactive partners who change and adapt together to meet new opportunities, conditions, and challenges."

SLIS students have considered how public libraries and other information institutions support the communities of which they are part. We encouraged SLIS alums to provide examples of their institutions' civic engagement. The stories range from early childhood literacy to information services for businesses to partnerships building on new information technologies.

What degree(s) did you earn from SLIS?

I have both the MIS and MLS. I started working on the MIS, and when I was close to finishing I decided to add the MLS and work on the dual degree. I think that the dual degree is very helpful. It is impossible to work in any kind of information setting without having a solid background in IS. SLIS Alumni Board President Letter - Fall 2006

Keith Kuhn

This issue of our alumni newsletter has a special focus – the international flavor of SLIS. As you'll see throughout this issue, the international character of SLIS is twofold: through students and faculty who are attracted to Bloomington and Indianapolis to study and teach (a reflection of the high esteem in which SLIS is held) and through our alumni who work in numerous locations throughout the world. More than 4,000 international students temporarily call IU home every year, studying on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, enriching scholarship, and contributing to cultural understanding. Most of the international students studying at SLIS return to their native countries to work as librarians or information professionals, taking with them the positive experiences and unique Midwestern perspectives they enjoyed at Indiana. They may be joined abroad by fellow SLIS graduates who are U.S. citizens taking advantage of rewarding career opportunities outside the U.S. While studying at SLIS, both foreign and U.S. students benefit from the roster of international faculty engaged in research and teaching in areas of global significance. The international side of SLIS is a reflection of how we all operate in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world, and how as students, faculty, and alumni, we foster international and cooperation "one handshake at a time."

2006 Greetings from the SLIS Alumni Board

sn-al-keithkuhn053.jpg

Alumni contribute to the ongoing success of SLIS in a number of ways, but one of the most important and rewarding is contributing to the development of recent graduates who are starting their professional careers. As alumni of a graduate professional program, we can be particularly effective by being mentors; a mentor is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "a person who acts as guide and adviser to another person, esp. one who is younger and less experienced. Later, more generally: a person who offers support and guidance to another; an experienced and trusted counselor or friend; a patron." Many of us, as alumni, can identify a person who, at some time in our lives, had a significant and positive impact on us and influenced our career and personal success.

Indiana University is one of the preeminent public research universities in the U.S., home to path-breaking scholarship across a truly impressive spectrum of fields. Almost every school and department, from anthropology to zoology and all points in between, has within its ranks someone whose research has resulted in a scientific discovery, an innovative theory, a reassessment of an established paradigm, a new tool, a fresh mindset. Research articles, interpretative monographs, chapters, conference papers, and patents pour forth, eloquent and humbling testimony to the cornucopia of human intellectual capital to be found in this remarkable university. The numbers speak for themselves: in the past decade IU has received approximately $3 billion in sponsored research awards, $413 million in fiscal year 2004 alone.
