"Lokman Meho, my professor for Information Sources and Services [now called Reference], was so encouraging and incredibly helpful in the editing and submission process, but I don't think I ever believed as strongly as he did that it would be accepted. I am so grateful for all his help and encouragement. I know for sure that if he hadn't pushed me and pointed me in the right directions, this wouldn't have happened."

Internet Filters in Public Libraries: Do They Belong?
Do Internet filters belong in a public library? SLIS MLS student Lana Gottschalk examined this important and controversial issue in her recently published paper — "Internet Filters in Public Libraries: Do They Belong?" Published in the Library Student Journal (September 2006 issue), Gottschalk wrote the paper for L608 Seminar in Intellectual Freedom, taught by SLIS faculty member Howard Rosenbaum.
Library Student Journal (LSJ) is an open-access online journal, which publishes student papers from Library and Information Science.
LSJ http://informatics.buffalo.edu/org/lsj/index.phpABSTRACT [source: LSJ]
With the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) of 2000, hundreds of public and school libraries in the United States have implemented internet filters. While filtering can keep children from viewing inappropriate Internet materials, the use of filters in public libraries infringes on the intellectual freedom of library users. Over-blocking and under-blocking are negatively affecting open research and use of online resources, bringing about profession-wide discussions about emerging technological changes in libraries. This essay examines these discussions and advocates for an approach incorporating privacy screens or recessed monitors, the establishment of clear Internet use policies, and better user education to help maintain the role of libraries as valued centers for free self-education and learning.
