Assistant Curator, Indiana State Museum
SLIS alumna, Kisha Tandy (MLS ’10) is the Assistant Curator for History and Culture at the Indiana State Museum. She was recently interviewed by the Indianapolis Star newspaper regarding her work on a new exhibit for the museum titled “Represent.” The exhibit which “presents work by African-Americans who have lived and worked in Indiana” opened on January 21 and will run through October 14, 2012.
The Society of American Archivists - Student Chapter (SAA-SC) of Indiana University’s School of Library and Information Science, Bloomington campus, is set to host their fourth annual Graduate Student and Early Professionals Conference Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4, 2012.
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) is pleased to announce the establishment of a new dual-degree program in partnership with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS).
SLIS faculty member actively contribute research to the profession. Their articles and papers make a difference. Read some recent contributes to the field.
SLIS faculty member Jingfeng Xia and eight of his students have co-authored an article that was recently published in the 2012 portal: Libraries and the Academy (Vol.12, No.1, pp. 85-102.) The article is titled "A Review of Open Access Self-Archiving Mandate Policies" and is accessible online through Project Muse.
The ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) Annual Conference was held this year in Dallas, Texas from January 17-20, 2012. At a reception on January 19th, the ALISE Board of Directors announced the 2012 award recipients. They noted that "these individuals exemplify the excellence that ALISE encourages and represents in the LIS community."
Barbara Weaver (MLS ’75), the regional library director for Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, was one of the 10 recipients of the 2011 I Love My Librarian Award. Weaver, who has 90 percent hearing loss as the result of a childhood illness, has served the people of Indiana as a librarian for over thirty years.
SLIS doctoral students Peter Hook and Shannon Oltmann presented posters at the ALISE/Jean Tague-Sutcliffe Doctoral Student Research Poster Competition, ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas on January 18, 2012. Hook is a doctoral candidate having completed his qualifying exams in 2011. Oltmann will receive her Ph.D. soon. She recently completed her final dissertation defense.

December 2011 found SLIS faculty member Hamid Ekbia giving talks at the London School of Economics and Poltical Science, at the University of Western Bohemia, and at the University of Trento. Below are abstracts from his talks, and links to the institutions where they were presented.
The 2012 Indianapolis Youth Literature Conference will be held on Saturday, February 25th at the Central Library of the Indianapolis Public Library. Co-sponsors of the conference are the Indiana State Library, the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Public Library, and Kids Ink.
Included here are some of the activities of SLIS faculty members at the close of the year 2011. As you can see, there are a variety of connections both globally and with other disciplines. From Ireland to Japan, from the Mayo Clinic to journal articles, SLIS faculty members are involved in future-driven research.
Current Master of Library Science student Jose Rincon led the book talk for the final session of SLIS S672 (Seminar on Literature for Youth). Jose is doing the Children's and Young Adult Services Specialization as a part of his MLS degree program. The display for the class was inviting. We asked instructor (and Specialization Director) Dana Backs for details, and we asked Jose Rincon to tell about the experience.
SLIS alumna Amy Jankowski (MLS'11) is now an Assistant Librarian with responsibilities for the Archives and Rare Books Collections at the San Diego Zoo Global Library in Escondido, California. While at SLIS, Amy did the Archives and Records Management Specialization within the Master of Library Science degree.
On January 3, 2012 the Office of Digital Humanities at the National Endowment for the Humanities posted the results of the Digging Into Data Challenge.
SLIS Dean Debora Shaw sent out an announcement regarding grants received by SLIS faculty members Cassidy Sugimoto, Staša Milojević, Ying Ding and Katy Börner.
Indiana University proudly issued the following press release. It includes news that SLIS faculty member, Dr. Katy Börner is one of ten IU faculty who were selected to be Fellows in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This is a significant honor for both SLIS and the university. The recipients will be recognized at the AAAS Annual Meeting to be held February 16-20, 2012 in Vancouver, Canada.
Brian Winterman (MLS'03) will participate in the Rubric Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (RAILS) project for the 2011-2012 academic year. Winterman, Information Fluency and Assessment Librarian for the IUB Libraries, will represent Indiana University. He “was selected from librarians attending the ACRL Assessment Immersion Program, an intensive professional development experience focused on building librarian capacity to assess student learning.”

This SLIS Information Commons is open during the official semester dates. It will be closed for the weekend of 12/17 and 12/18 — and between Friday, 12/23/11 through Monday, 1/2/12.
SLIS doctoral student Guo Zhang presented a paper at the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) International Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems (MEDES). The conference was held from November 21-23, 2011 in San Francisco, California.
SLIS MLS student, Ulrich Houzanme, presented a poster on influential researchers from Africa in the field of Library and Information Science at the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) 2011 Annual Meeting. The conference was held this year in New Orleans, Louisiana from October 9-12, 2011. Ulrich stated that ASIS&T offered a platform where the constructive criticism received will help improve his research. He expects the paper to be ready for publication in the early months of next year.
Each year, around 160 new students begin their studies at SLIS - with about 20 of these students beginning in the Spring Semester. This year, new students admitted to begin in the Spring 2012 semester come from Wyoming, Indiana, China, West Virginia, Iran, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Washington. We look forward to welcoming them to SLIS.
The Indiana University Winter Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011. The Ceremony is a nice event - and a fun way to celebrate graduation. There is plenty of room for guests. No tickets are required - and parking is free.

The Indiana Library Federation recently awarded Marcia Smith-Woodard the 2011 Special Services Award. The award “recognizes exceptional contributions or services which strengthen library services in a local community, school, or across the state. The person’s contributions must be of an extraordinary nature with unprecedented benefits to library or media center services.”

The column is part of the ACRL Insider, a newsletter for the Association of College and Research Libraries. Each year, Library Journal surveys graduates from all American Library Association (ALA)-accredited schools for its annual Placements and Salaries Survey, published as a special October 15 issue. The survey emphasizes information relevant to current LIS students as they begin their job search, including trends, salaries, and types of library jobs graduates find out of school. SLIS at Indiana University participates in this survey.
Each year, the American Library Association selects approximately 75 newer librarians and information specialists to participate in its Emerging Leaders Program. The program, which began in 2007, “is designed to enable library staff and information workers from across the country to participate in project planning workgroups; network with peers; gain an inside look into ALA structure; and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.”
SLIS alumna Sara Laughlin (MLS ’72) was awarded the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce - Franklin Initiative.
Amy Koester graduated from SLIS with her Master of Library Science degree in May 2011. She is now a Children’s Librarian at the Corporate Parkway Branch Library in Wentzville, Missouri. The library is a part of the St. Charles City - County Library District. In a recent email interview Amy told us about her job and shared tips for current students.
"Professor Jean Preer has informed Executive Associate Dean Tomas Lipinski of her intent to retire at the end of July, 2012. Dr. Preer joined the IU School of Library and Information Science in fall 2002, one of the first faculty in the school's expanded program in Indianapolis. In her years at SLIS Indianapolis, she has been recognized for both teaching and research excellence.
Students from many departments enroll in SLIS classes to enhance their degrees. Michael V. Ney is an example. He received his Master of Health Administration degree from Indiana University (IUPUI campus) in 1990. Then, he continued his education with an additional 16 credit hours in SLIS (School of Library and Information Science). Michael recently wrote to SLIS Dean Debora Shaw to congratulate her on her appointment. Recalling his time as a student in one of her classes, he commented that the "additional courses I took with SLIS in the '90s have paid dividends ever since."

SLIS alumna Susan Schlag (MLS'95) has had an interesting career path. In a recent email interview, she highlights some of her current work and some of the favorite aspects of her job(s). Susan works as a Marketing Communications Consultant/Writer at Roche Diagnostics Corporation, Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition, she is the Founder and Academic Coach for Scholar's Secret, also in Indianapolis.
The Fall 2011 edition of SLIS Network (Vol. 49, No.2), the SLIS alumni magazine, was recently published and mailed to SLIS alumni. “This magazine is published twice a year by the School of Library and Information Science and its alumni association, in cooperation with the Indiana University Alumni Association, to encourage alumni interest in, and support of, SLIS.”
The 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) was held in New Orleans, LA from October 9-12. This year’s theme was “Bridging the Gulf: Communication and Information in Society, Technology and Work.” SLIS faculty, doctoral students, and master degree students participated in a variety of ways including presentations, posters, and committee planning work.
SLIS alumna Ye Ja (Sunny) Sanders (MLS ‘05) is an Associate Project Manager with Library Associate Company (LAC) at the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) in Washington DC. In a recent email interview she told us about her job and shared tips for current students.
SLIS alumna Cara Stone (MLS ‘11) is the Faculty Development and Instruction Librarian at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. While at SLIS, Cara was President of the American Library Association-Student Chapter at SLIS. The ALA-SC won national chapter of the year (2011) for accomplishments during her tenure in 2010.
This year, a number of SLIS student associations joined in planning an exciting Career Con. They partnered with the Chi Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (the international honor society for library and information science.) The Chi Chapter has hosted an annual fall career event for SLIS students. This year's combined events offer lots of options for students to learn about preparing for their career and their job search.
• October 10, 2011 - Dr. Börner presented a talk during the 2nd Annual Indiana Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Retreat. Her talk was titled "Scientometrics: Measuring and Analyzing the Products of our Labor." CTSI was "established in 2008 with a $25 million dollar award from the National Institutions of Health…"
The Beta Phi Mu, Chi Chapter, in cooperation with the SLIS American Library Association Student Chapter and SLIS Career Con are holding a Career Search and Resume Review Forum Friday, October 21, 2011 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Ron Day presented the keynote talk for the Post-Graduate Program in Information Sciences of the Universidade Federal Fluminense's (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) Seminar on Information Studies on September 26, 2011. The seminar's theme was "Archive Studies, Library Science, and Information Science: Identities, Contrasts and Perspectives of Interlocution".
Blaise Cronin is the Editor-in-Chief of JASIST (Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology). His October 21st editorial (Volume 62, Number 10) is entitled "The Intelligence Disconnect" (pages 1867-1868). It examines the intersections between information science as a discipline and the intelligence service.
In the October 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, SLIS faculty members Staša Milojević, Cassidy Sugimoto, and Ying Ding with SLIS doctoral student Erjia Yan, co-authored an article titled:

The Fall 2011 Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) Talk Series began on September 30th with a presentation by Henry Jenkins, Provost’s Professor of Communication, Journalism, and Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. His talk was titled "Spreadable Media: Creating Meaning and Value in Networked Culture."
