Who's Your Research SuperChef?

Campus Flowers

SLIS alumna Carrie Donovan, and current SLIS student Rachel Slough, co-authored a chapter in The Library Instruction Cookbook (ACRL - Association of College and Research Libraries, 2009).

"The Library Instruction Cookbook is a practical collection of 'learning recipes,' each of which includes a plan for conducting a specific type of learning session and which indicates how the recipe reflects specific ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education.

The Library Instruction Cookbook is stuffed with recipes from academic librarians from around the world. Chef editors Ryan Sittler and Doug Cook have gathered 97 of the best lesson plans to spice up the student experience." [About]

Donovan (MLS'99) is the Instructional Services Librarian, Indiana University Information Commons and Undergraduate Library Services - Bloomington. Slough (current Master of Library Science student) is a graduate assistant for Reference and Instructional Services working with Donovan.

Their book chapter/lesson plan is titled: “Wikipedia v. Google v. The Library: Who’s your Research SuperChef?” It is under the section "Evaluating Resources - Fee vs. Free." It is designed (with humor) to help undergraduate students compare Wikipedia, Google, and the library as research tools.

"This appetizer has student judging Wikipedia, Google, and the Library as the 'Top Place on the Web to Do Research.' Groups brainstorm then present their finding to the class."
