The Society of American Archivists – Student Chapter offers many opportunities for students interested in archives, museums, and special collections. Past events have included workshops, panel discussions, and outreach services to high schools and the community. President Jessica Moad sent information about the group and its plans for the coming 2009/2010 academic year. Moad is a current student in the Master of Library Science degree program.
“The Society of American Archivists Student Chapter at Indiana University, Bloomington has a goal this year to provide interesting and enjoyable events and activities that will help students build their resumes and become more familiar with archives and special collections. We recently gained seven new, fantastic officers, bringing us to a total of nine, which has allowed each officer to have the time to focus on specific areas in order to meet our goals efficiently.
With the input of our members, fresh ideas from our officers, and guidance from past officers, we have started several exciting projects. We are planning for a conference at which students can present their research, and also for guest speakers, a workshop, and tours of archives and special collections around campus. In addition, we have started new fundraising projects, are attending and promoting the Archives and Special Collections Month events at IU this month, and have started a collaboration with the University Archives to provide unpaid archival internships for students that will participate in an effort to collect and process the records of campus student groups.
As president this year, I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate our officers and all of their hard work and talent, as well as our members that often contribute more than I could ever hope for!
