Internship: Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University

Bergis Jules is a current student in the dual Master of Library Science/Master of Arts in African American and African Diaspora Studies program. He was a 2006-2008 scholarship recipient of the Association of Research Libraries Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce. He also received the Harold T. Pinkett Award from the Society of American Archivists.

Oxford Internet Institute and Eric Meyer

"Many key scientific questions facing the world today cannot be answered by the stereotypical lone researcher; scientists, social scientists and humanities scholars today are much more likely than in the past to work in teams as they address complex problem such as understanding climates change, modeling potentials impacts of public policy decisions, or visualizing trends in history." [Eric Meyer, OII publication, p.12]

Two African Studies Publications for Lindsey Badger

SLIS faculty member Lokman Meho, sends news that Lindsey Badger (current MLS/MA student) has had two papers submitted for IU classes accepted for publication. The first paper was originally submitted for G732 - Bibliography of Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper entitled, "A Selective and Annotated Bibliography of English and French Language Sources on Cape Verdean Literature," has been accepted for publication in Electronic Journal of African Bibliographies (EJAB). EJAB is an online referred journal of bibliographies which is housed at the University of Iowa Libraries.

Art Librarianship Students Receive Awards

Five Master of Library Science students who focus in the area of art librarianship received awards this spring. These awards came from friends of SLIS who wanted to offer special encouragement and support to students studying art librarianship. Tony White (Head, IU Fine Arts Library) and B.J. Irvine (retired Head, IU Fine Arts Library) nominated students for these awards.

MLS Student Angela Dresselhaus Wins Conference Grant

First-year MLS student Angela (Slaughter) Dresselhaus, who works full-time in the serials cataloging unit at Wells Library in addition to her studies, was recently awarded a grant to attend the 2008 Ohio Valley Group of Technical Service Librarians (OVGTSL) 2008 conference in Dayton, Ohio, May 14–16, 2008.

Seven SLIS Grads Chosen as ALA 2008 Emerging Leaders

The School of Library and Information Science would like to congratulate the seven SLIS graduates who have been named to the 2008 American Library Association Emerging Leaders Program. Instituted in 2007 by ALA president Leslie Burger, the program provides leadership and development opportunities to librarians who have recently joined the profession.

Student Pathfinders Highlighted in New Web Collection

Over the past several years, SLIS faculty member Lokman Meho has been collecting student pathfinders from his Reference classes. Recently he invited students from other instructors' classes to have their work included. The result is a new web collection of 265 Student Pathfinders/Research Guides that can be viewed by subject or in alphabetical order by the student author's name.
