Course Description:
This course reviews important educational theories for application to secondary school, college, and
university settings which provide training and education programs to teach students skillsleading to
information literacy. Standards from AASL and ACRL are applied to instructional design and practice
including lecture, collaboration with faculty, and evaluation of online tutorials.
Course Outcomes:
Students will understand the instructional role of librarians.
Students will develop a working knowledge of teaching methods andlearning theories as they
apply to libraries andinformation literacy.
Students will develop the knowledge to plan, manage, promote, and assessinstruction and
information literacy programs.
Instructor Expectations:
Students should be prepared to attendevery class and participate in class discussions.
Students should be constructive in their evaluations of others.
Students should be open to new ideas.
Students should be prepared to work andlearn collaboratively.
Students should be ready to get creative and have fun!
Readings:
There is no required textbook for this course. Readingswill be available via OnCourse and through the
IUB Libraries.

Discussion Leaders
Each student will partner with a classmate to lead the discussion for one course topic during the
semester.
Peer Critique
Each student will critique a classmate's individual presentation during the semester.
Presentations
During this course, students will make two presentations, one individually and one as a member of a
group.
Participation:
Your participation will be evaluated based on the quality of all the assignments you turn in and on your
class participation. Quantity, in terms of class participation, is always considered, but qualityis
paramount. In addition to easily documented items such as meeting deadlines and class attendance, I
will be looking for: engagement, investment, thoughtfulness, creativity, attention, contribution,
preparation.
