SLIS Technology Help
I'm the new webmaster for my student group!
Please have your faculty sponsor send an email to
root@slis.indiana.edu asking that your user name be added to the group account, and the old webmaster's user name be removed. Please ensure all files you create are group witeable; and that all existing files from the prior webmaster are also group writeable.
We need a unix group for our class project.
Please send an email to
root@slis.indiana.edu and include what class the project is for, usernames for everyone in the
group, estimated disk usage, and how long you will need the group.
You can GRANT permission to anyone with a database account to objects you own.
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON sometable TO slisweb
See the
PostgreSQL Manual for more information.
Only active Faculty, Staff, and students currently enrolled in SLIS courses have rights to use SLIS computers. The list of SLIS students is provided by the Office of the Registrar. (If you sign up for classes late, you may not be included on the list and access may be delayed.)
If you fit into one of these categories and are unable to log in, please see the consultant on duty (or email root@slis.indiana.edu) and provide your SLIS status, user name, course that you are enrolled in, etc.
IU has several types of accounts available:
- Network Access Account offers wireless access via the IU VPN from a user's personal laptop.
- Sponsored Computing Account for individuals who are affiliated with IU, such as contractors and researchers, but who are not officially IU students, faculty, or staff (including hourly staff).
Once the individual has a sponsored
sponsored computing account, contact
root@slis.indiana.edu for access to SLIS resouces
Ensure that you have a www directory in your home directory on the proper server. Any files that you wish to be seen on the web must also be world readable.
mkdir ~/www will create the directory if you do not have one.
Files in your www directory cannot be world writable, or the server will block access from the webserver.
After a period of time (http://kb.iu.edu/data/auox.html),
the university disables accounts of individuals who are no longer affiliated with the
university. At that time, interactive access to SLIS computing accounts
will naturally end. For ella/iris accounts at SLIS there will be a one
semester grace period for your accounts after you graduate. You may keep
"portfolio" material in place during this time but after this grace period
your account is subject to deletion. Once the university disables your
login to university systems, you will be unable to access your files. SLIS
has no control over the timing of the disabling or retirement of your
computing accounts, so you should ensure that you have created a backup
copy of all your materials BEFORE you graduate.
SLIS students are encouraged to keep their own backup of their SLIS and IU
materials at all times. Once an account is deleted it can not be
recovered. If the university has disabled an
account, logins will not be possible.
Students who take classes at SLIS, but who are not enrolled in a SLIS
program are not entitled to SLIS accounts if they are not taking classes
in the current academic term. Such students should ensure that they have
their own backups prior to the end of the semester in which they are
enrolled in SLIS courses. Any materials left after the end of the semester
are subject to deletion.
Students not currently enrolled in SLIS classes will not have access to SLIS OS X Systems.
Students not currently enrolled in SLIS classes will not have access to SLIS Windows Systems.

In short, no. Windows desktops are machine specific, and the machines could be re-imaged at any time in troubleshooting a machine.
Our OS X systems use network desktops; your data follows you regardless of what machine you use at SLIS. The desktops are very stable - but the data is not backed up. Please see the section on disk quotas for storage limitations.
Files are accessible on iris via scp/sftp. At SLIS, Cyberduck is installed on all SLIS maintained computers. Any program that supports scp/sftp/ssh should work.

Thanks to an IU Parents Fund Grant the Libraries have 4 Presentation Practice Rooms that are available to students on the 4th floor of the west tower in the Wells Library. The rooms allow students to practice presentations, record their presentation, and burn the presentation video to DVD. Students may check out a key to the rooms at the Information Commons (IC) Circulation Desk located at the entrance of the west tower.

SLIS students are allotted 1500 pages each per semester (fall, spring, and
summer) of printing on SLIS printers. The Ph.D. student allotment is 2000 pages
per semester. Overage charges are at a rate equal to the cost of photocopying on
a campus Self Service Copy
Machine (Spring 2007 rate is $0.10 per page). Overages shall be billed at the end of the semester in which they
are incurred.
You also have a 1000 page quota for STC printers, found in STC labs all over campus.
At Indiana University Bloomington, you can find large format printers
or plotters (for prints up to 36 inches wide) in the following
Student Technology Centers (STCs):
|
Information Commons (IC) |
$10 per plot, graphics-quality, glossy or matte finish
|
| BH 120 |
$8 per plot, business-quality, matte finish |
A plotter with graphics-quality output is best for printing
photographic images and detailed maps from geographic information systems
